The Week Ahead 12/7-12/11

On Monday, 12/7, students will have spelling packets and reading logs due. The reading logs are no longer done on paper. Students will now complete them online. I sent an email containing the link earlier in the week, the link to complete the reading log can also be found on the class blog, on the tab labeled "Reading Log Form."

The time has finally come for our field trip to JA Biztown! On Wednesday, 12/9,  we will be taking off. It is an all day field trip, in order to make it on time, we will be leaving the school at 8:30. Please make sure your student gets to school on time. We will arrive back at the school around 2 pm. Monday, and Tuesday we will be busy with last minute preparations for the field trip. Thank you to all of the volunteers who went to the training and will be joining us for the day! Quick reminder to the volunteers, you will need to provide your own transportation to the field trip, as you are expected to arrive about 45 minutes before the students.

In math we will continue our study of division. Students will be solving division problems with remainders. They will also be visually representing the problems with place value charts, tape diagrams, and area models. This is the point in the year where students who aren't proficient with their multiplication facts can get frustrated. It is so much harder to learn long division if you don't know how many times 4 can go into 26 without going over. We work on our multiplication fluency by practicing with a different number each week. You can help your student with their multiplication fluency by practicing with them at home. There are great apps that can be used like Flash to Pass, or students can go on Moby Max and do the Fact Practice on there. Also, good old fashioned flash cards work great. Any extra practice you do with your child will help. Next week our fact practice in class will focus on multiplying by 12's.

Students are in the middle of reading their fantasy novels. They will be giving book talks on their novel on Thursday, December 17th. A rubric was sent home with specifics on how the book talks will be scored. Students can use notecards during their book talk. Ask your student to tell you about a mentor or companion who helped the hero in their fantasy novel.

Students will continue working on a narrative piece that they wrote earlier in the year. They will  take it through the revision and editing process to make it a published draft. These final drafts will be typed. Students will be given time at school to type, but if they fall behind, they may need to finish typing at home.

Trimester 1 report cards will be sent home with students on Tuesday, 12/8.
