The Week Ahead 11/2-11/6

Big thanks to all of the parents who made our Halloween party so much fun! I can't tell you how amazing it is for me, as a teacher, to have the whole party taken care of, and not have to do anything!  Hopefully you read the email I sent early last week that gave information about the homework change. In case you didn't, students don't have any spelling packets or reading logs due on Monday, 11/2. Instead, they have seven questions they need to answer about their biography book. While they won't be turning in spelling packets or reading logs on Monday, 11/2, they will be sent home with a spelling packet and reading log that will be due the following Monday, 11/9.  Last week we started our Biztown unit with lessons on services offered by financial institutions, depositing checks, and maintaining an accurate balance of a checking account. The students were shocked to learn that when you take a loan from a financial institution, you have to pay back all of the money ...

The Week Ahead 10/26-10/30

Thank you to everyone who came in for conferences. I enjoyed getting a chance to talk about this great group of kids!  On Monday, October 26th we will begin a unit called Biztown. Biztown encompasses elements of community and economy, work readiness, financial literacy, and business management. The unit will be taught in all of the 4th and 5th grade classrooms and will culminate with a field trip on December 9th. We will need adult volunteers from the participating classrooms. A volunteer must be able to attend a Biztown training on either Tuesday, 12/1 from 6-7:30 pm, or Thursday, 12/3 from 10:11:30 am. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for the field trip. In math we have started Module 2. This module involves using the metric system to make conversions and solve problems. It is a very short module, with only 5 lessons. If students don't complete their lesson in class, it is homework. Here is a good resource for helping your student with homew...

The Week Ahead 10/19-10/23

The students will only have school three days next week, but there will be a lot going on during those three days. They will have their usual weekly homework due on Monday. They will also be taking their spelling test that day. The reason there is only three days of school next week is because of conferences. If you haven't signed up for a time to meet with me yet please go to  the following link.  https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/West_Tualatin_View_Elementary   If you need to schedule your conference by phone, please contact the office at 503-259-7830. The purpose of this conference will be to look at where each child is now and make goals for them. I would like students to be present at the conference. The realistic fiction book presentations will be on Wednesday, 10/21. Students will be scored based on the rubric that was sent home a couple weeks ago.  We finished the lessons in Module 1 on Friday. Next Monday students will ...

Today the students learned about Emily Carr and her work inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. They created their own piece of art inspired by Emily Carr.

The Week Ahead 10/12-10/16

When students return to school on Monday, 10/12, they will have their spelling packets and reading logs due. They will also be tested on their spelling words from the packet and be given their weekly homework for the following Monday. In math we have continued to work on solving multi-step word problems using addition and subtraction. We should finish up the lessons from module 1 by the end of next week. Early the following week we will have a review day and then take the End of Module 1 Assessment. In addition to our lessons, we have been working on our multiplication fact fluency. Each week we practice a different number. Next week we will be working on multiplying by 3's.  Each child was sent home with guidelines and the rubric that will be used to score their realistic fiction book presentation. On Monday, 10/12 students need to tell me what they will use for their visual representation. The presentations will be given on Wednesday, 10/21. To help keep student...

We had a great time getting to know our buddies from Mrs. Perrin's 1st grade class! The buddies made Venn Diagrams to record their similarities and differences.
