The Week Ahead 3/19-3/23

I can't believe we've reached the week before Spring Break! The year is flying!

Inquiry
Next week we will wrap up our inquiry unit with the central idea of values influence leaders and impact decision making. Last week students finished up their research on a bill from 2017 Oregon Legislative session. They wrote a summary of the bill and identified the values that went in to making it. Our classroom will now turn in to a room of legislators. Students will be divided into Senators and Representatives. Then placed in committees. Each committee will write a bill that they feel would make our class a better place. In order for the bill to become a classroom law it will need to get a majority vote in both the Senate and the House. Then Governor Blanc will have to sign it.

State Capitol Building Field Trip
Our field trip to the State Capitol Building will be on Thursday, March 22nd. Please make sure your student arrives at school on time, as we will be leaving early in the school day. Students will be on their feet for the whole tour, so they will want to wear comfortable shoes. In addition, they will need to bring their own lunch. School lunches can be ordered, but you need to notify me by Wednesday, March 21, if you want a school lunch for your child. We will assume your student is bringing a lunch unless we hear otherwise from you.

Reading
A goal for 4th grade students is to be reading about a chapter book a week. To work towards this goal students all selected a book they wanted to read last Monday, 3/12. They have the expectation of finishing the book in a little over a week, Wednesday, 3/21. Then they will write a summary of the book and turn it in to me by Friday, 3/23. In order to keep themselves on track, everyone calculated how many pages they will need to read each day in order to finish their book on time. Check in with your student and see if they are on track to finish their book by next Wednesday.
