The Week Ahead 3/12-3/16
Conferences
It was great to sit down and discuss the progress of each student at conferences. I hope you left with a clear vision on what your student can do to finish the year strong. Please let me know if any questions or concerns come up.
Inquiry
Last week students learned about the three branches of our state government. They also learned the process a bill goes through to become a law. We did an in depth case study of the Oregon Bottle Bill to look at an example from real life. Next week students will select a different historical law and research how community values led to it becoming a law. They will create a cartoon to tell the story of the law.
Idiom of the week: Let the cat out of the bag
Math
Next week we will further our understanding of fractions by using benchmark fractions to compare fractions. For example students will use a fraction like 1/2 as a benchmark. Then, when given two fractions to compare, like 6/10 and 3/6, they will determine which is larger by using 1/2 as a benchmark. Because they know that 3/6 is equal to 1/2 and 6/10 is larger than 1/2, they know that 6/10 is larger than 3/6.
Field Trip
Our field trip to the State Capitol Building will take place on Thursday, 3/22. We will leave the school at about 9:15 and expect to return around 2. The permission slips were handed out at conferences. If you took your permission slips home, please sign them and send them back to school on Monday. Also, make sure you let me know if you want to order a school lunch for your child. If I don't hear from you, I will assume your student is bringing their lunch from home.
