The Week Ahead 4/3-4/6

Update I hope everyone had a great spring break! When students return on Monday, I will be out of the building at a District Computer Science Task Force Meeting. I look forward to getting back in the classroom with the students on Tuesday! Math  Students will begin adding and subtracting fractions next week. At the beginning of the week they will be working with common denominators. By the end of the week they will advance to uncommon denominators. Inquiry  Our new inquiry unit has the central idea of people use scientific knowledge to respond to a changing Earth. This until will be an inquiry into the causes of global change, human response to change, and taking action. PTC Fundraiser  There are still some open spots for students who want to participate in the 4th grade PTC fundraising party at Super Play. The Week Ahead 3/19-3/23

I can't believe we've reached the week before Spring Break! The year is flying! Inquiry Next week we will wrap up our inquiry unit with the central idea of values influence leaders and impact decision making. Last week students finished up their research on a bill from 2017 Oregon Legislative session. They wrote a summary of the bill and identified the values that went in to making it. Our classroom will now turn in to a room of legislators. Students will be divided into Senators and Representatives. Then placed in committees. Each committee will write a bill that they feel would make our class a better place. In order for the bill to become a classroom law it will need to get a majority vote in both the Senate and the House. Then Governor Blanc will have to sign it.  State Capitol Building Field Trip Our field trip to the State Capitol Building will be on Thursday, March 22nd. The Week Ahead 3/12-3/16

Conferences It was great to sit down and discuss the progress of each student at conferences. I hope you left with a clear vision on what your student can do to finish the year strong. Please let me know if any questions or concerns come up.   Inquiry Last week students learned about the three branches of our state government. They also learned the process a bill goes through to become a law. We did an in depth case study of the Oregon Bottle Bill to look at an example from real life. Next week students will select a different historical law and research how community values led to it becoming a law. They will create a cartoon to tell the story of the law. Idiom of the week: Let the cat out of the bag Math Next week we will further our understanding of fractions by using benchmark fractions to compare fractions. For example students will use a fraction like 1/2 as a benchmark. Then, when given two fractions to compare, like 6/10 and 3/6, they will determine which is larger b

The Week Ahead 3/5-3/7

Conferences Spring conferences will take place next week. If you have not signed up yet, please go to the link below and select a time to meet. https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/West_Tualatin_View_Elementary State Capitol Field Trip  We will be taking a field trip to visit the State Capitol Building in Salem on Thursday, March 22nd. We will leave West TV at 9:15 and expect to return around 2. If you are interested in joining us as a chaperone on this trip please let me know by Wednesday, March 7th at 8am. If we have more volunteers than available spots we will draw names to determine who will be joining us. The permission slips for the field trip will be available to fill out at conferences. Math  Students took a mini-assessment over the first six lessons of our fraction unit. I will go over the assessment with parents at conferences.
