The Week Ahead 1/28-2/1

Grading Day There will be no school for students on Monday, 1/28. It is a teacher grading day. Inquiry Last week we finished our how the world works inquiry unit with the filming of our videos. All of the 4th grade classes will get together for a watch party on Wednesday to share their great work! Next week we'll begin our how we organize ourselves inquiry unit. The central idea of this unit is community values influence leaders and impact decision making. We will be exploring this central idea by studying the state of Oregon government. Math  Next week we will begin our fractions unit. We will start by learning how to demonstrate fraction equivalence. Then we will begin comparing fractions. Prodigy is a great way for your student to practice math at home. Here is the link to sign in.  Idiom of the week: piece of cake Scholastic Book Order  The next Scholastic book order will be submitted on Friday, 2/1. You can order online here. The Week Ahead 1/22-1/25

There will be no school on Monday, 1/21 in observance of MLK Day. How the World Works Our big focus next week will be wrapping up our how the world works inquiry unit. Last week students wrote an informational paper about their natural disaster. We will not be spending anymore time in class working on these papers. Check in with your student and ask if they need to finish their paper at home. Next week students will work in a group to create a PSA about their natural disaster. We use a green screen so students are able to make the videos have all kinds of interesting backgrounds. A chunk of time will be devoted in the morning and afternoon to work on preparing these videos. First the groups will write a script that outlines what everyone will say, then they get a chance to select backgrounds. We will be filming on Thursday. Make sure your student doesn't wear green or blue on filming day! Idiom of the week: cat got your tongue?     Continent Club The next Continent Club

The Week Ahead 1/14-1/18

We had a great first week back from winter break! We took some time to review classroom procedures and expectations and we have settled back to our regular routines. How the World Works The students had an opportunity to learn from an expert panel last Thursday. A huge thank you to Andrew Phelps, the Director of the Office of Oregon Emergence Management, Mike Mumaw, the Emergency Manager for the City of Beaverton, Ashley Vanderjagt, the Emergency Coordinator for Beaverton School District, and Ms. McNamee our building Principal! It was amazing for our students to get such an authentic learning experience! Each student has selected a natural disaster they want to research. Next week they will begin writing an informational paper about their natural disaster. After their papers are complete they will collaborate with peers to create a PSA video. Have your student tell you some information they've learned from their research.   Reading  Students have a reading log due on Tuesd
