The Week Ahead 11/24-11/25

I hope you have had a chance to look at the previous blog post. There are pictures from the Continent Club Check and Art Literacy. Both of those activities are run by parents and they are both great experiences for the students. Thank you to everyone who works to make those programs so meaningful to the kids!

With the Thanksgiving Holiday coming up, there will only be school on Monday and Tuesday next week. Because it is such a short week there will be no reading logs or spelling packets due when students return on Tuesday, 12/2. The students will be returning on Tuesday, 12/2, because Monday, 12/1, is a Grading Day.

We have been integrating the writing and social studies curriculum. The students have been learning about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and informational writing. At this point in our study of the Corps of Discovery, the explorers have just finished building Fort Mandan, which is where they will stay during the winter months of 1804-1805. They have already lost one member of the group to sickness, had another member attempt to desert, and had a tense standoff with the Teton Sioux tribe. We have looked at mentor texts to learn some of the key features of informational texts. The students have been applying what they have learned about Lewis and Clark with what they have learned about informational texts and started to write some informational chapters about Lewis and Clark. We will continue this integrated unit next week.

Next week in math our fact practice will focus on multiplying by 10's. We will be working on Module 3, Lesson 9 and Lesson 10. These will continue to focus on multiplication. I recommend using this website as a reference for helping your student with their math homework http://www.oakdale.k12.ca.us/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1409564754720.

There is a great opportunity to learn more about Playworks. On Wednesday, December 3rd from 6pm-7pm, in the gym, there will be a chance to learn some creative Playworks activities. Make sure to wear active clothes and tennis shoes if you plan to attend.

Green Team applications have been sent home. If your student is interested they need to turn their application to me by 12/9.
