The Week Ahead 5/18-5/21

Friday, 5/22 will be a grading day for staff and Monday, 5/25 is Memorial Day. There will be no school on either day.

The math extension activity is due on Monday, 5/18. Students only have to bring in their book. They do not need to bring in a sample of the food they made. Reading logs will also be due on Monday, 5/18.

Our field trip to the Capitol Building in Salem will take place on Wednesday, 5/27. We will be leaving West TV at 9:15 and returning at 1:30. Students were sent home with paperwork about the trip on Thursday. Please return the district permission slip, the lunch information sheet, and the waiver from the Capitol by Thursday, 5/21. If you volunteered to chaperone you should have received an email from me letting you know if your name was one of the five drawn. Let me know if you have any questions about the trip.

We have created our own classroom version of the Oregon State Government. The students have been divided into members of the House of Representatives and Senate. They have also been placed into committees who will create a bill that they want passed as a class law. This week they brainstormed ideas for possible bills they wanted to write and started rough drafts of their bills. Next week they will fine tune their bills and prepare them for the House and Senate. If a bill passes in the House and Senate they will come to the desk of the Governor (Mr. Blanc) who will decide whether to sign the bill and make it a law, or veto it. Ask your student about the bill their committee is working on. Don't forget about this great website https://www.icivics.org. It has all kinds of fun games that teach students about how the government works.

The final literature circle book groups will be reading Newberry winners. The Newberry Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. Each of the students were given there new book on Thursday and will have their first book group meeting next Thursday the 21st. Ask your student which book they are reading.
