The Week Ahead 9/21-9/25

Thanks to everyone who made it to Back to School Night. I feel lucky to work at a school with such supportive families! Students will have their first spelling packet and reading logs due on Monday, 9/21. They will also be tested on their spelling words that day.

In math students will be working on a lesson each day. If a lesson is not finished in class, students are expected to complete it at home and return it to school the following day. Here is a great resource for helping your student with their math homework http://www.oakdale.k12.ca.us/ENY_Hmwk_Intro_Math. Next week we will be focusing on comparing and rounding multi-digit whole numbers. If your student is completing their math at school and you want them to work on math at home, have them do Moby Max https://www.mobymax.com/or1248. Each student's username is their first name followed by 2015. Make sure to use all lower case letters and leave no space between the name and the year. The password for everyone is blanc. Again, make sure to use only lower case letters for the password.

Our first trimester focus in writing will primarily be narrative stories. Both personal narrative (true stories) and realistic fiction (made up). So far we have worked on using dialogue to show details about our stories, instead of just telling the reader what happened. For example, one student is writing a story about a sleep over and they mentioned an epic nerf war they had. That student is now rewriting that story and instead of telling us that there was an epic nerf war, he is showing us by using dialogue to show the actual words that were said during the nerf war. He is working to make the reader feel like they are watching the nerf war happen as they read his story. This is the type of work all students are working on in writing. As we begin to get a better grasp of dialogue, we will start learning how to include figurative language in our stories to make them even better.

Students were sent home with Scholastic book orders last week. If you choose to order any books please order online at https://clubs2.scholastic.com/?esp=CORPHP/ib/////NAV/Parents/QLinks/ReadingClub////. Our class code is DKQ9P. All points that are earned from book orders will be used to purchase more books for our classroom library.

Next week I'll begin putting together a volunteer schedule. It works best for me to have volunteers commit to a certain schedule, for example joining us for math every Tuesday. The two areas that I like to use volunteers the most are for math and reading. We have math from 10:40-11:50 each day and reading from 2:00-2:55. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me and let me know whether you want to volunteer in math or reading and if there is a certain day of the week that works best for you.
