The Week Ahead 5/22-5/26

Reading
Students will be continuing their historical fiction book groups. Last week we talked about how when reading historical fiction it is helpful to construct two timelines, one for your character, and another for the events in history. It can be a great visual to see how the historical events impacted the story of the main character. The students worked with their book group members to create two side by side timelines.

Idiom of the week: behind the eight ball

Math
Next week we will begin module 7. This module focuses on converting measurement units, both standard and metric. It will also involve solving story problems with measurement.

Inquiry
The students have been working on writing scripts for their rapid change PSA. On Monday, they will use the school's new green screen to film their videos. We hope to get through all of our videos on Monday, however we have some time set aside on Tuesday that we can use to finish up.

Field Trip
On Thursday, 6/8 we will be taking a field trip to the Johnson Creek Wetlands. This location is off Barnes Rd. just before NW 118th. The students will be leaving West TV at 12:30 and we expect to arrive at our destination within ten minutes. We will head back to the school at 2:15 and expect to arrive back before 2:30.

During this field trip students will be going to different stations to test water quality, look for indicators of a healthy watershed, and make observations. We are asking for at least eight volunteers to help at the stations. We will have volunteer training at the site of the field trip, the Monday before the trip, 6/5 at 3:30. In order to volunteer you will need to attend the training on 6/5, have a completed background check through the office, and be able to provide your own transportation to the field trip location. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for this field trip.

Visitors
Next week we will have two different visitors to our class. On Monday, 5/22, Mad Science will join us for a lesson on energy. This will be great review of the material we covered in the first trimester. On Thursday, 5/25, Clean Water Services will do a presentation on beavers and their role in wetlands. This will be a great lead in to our final science inquiry unit of the year that has the central idea of natural resources have a structure and function within a a community. Some of the guiding questions of this unit will be:

  1. What is a healthy watershed?
  2. What role do organisms have in maintaining a balanced watershed?
  3. How do people affect the watershed?
