The Week Ahead 9/25-9/29

Reading
Students will turn in their 1st weekly reading log of the year on Tuesday, 9/26. They are expected to record a minimum of three hours reading outside of school each week. Now that we have established our reading expectations for the classroom, students will begin getting reading goals next week. Each student is responsible for working on their reading goal as they read, have your student tell you what their reading goal is.

Vocab
Our first vocabulary test of the year will be on Tuesday, 9/26. Students were sent home with a paper copy of the words but they can also practice the words here. One thing we have talked about this week is that figurative language is everywhere. I've let the class know that any student who notices figurative language over the weekend in a song, book, conversation, or anywhere else will be added to the classroom Wall of Fame.

Math
Our focus in math has been communicating our thinking with each other. The students have been working on problems and then sharing with each other how they chose to go about solving them. It has been fun to see all of the different ways students use to come up with the same answer. Students have also used a program called Dreambox. It can be accessed at https://play.dreambox.com/login/udp4/r9ks. Their username is their lunch number and they should know their password. We spend some time in class on Dreambox, but students are welcome to use it at home as well. It is important to not help your student when they are using Dreambox. In order for the program to give them appropriate lessons, it needs to know what they can do independently.

Conferences
We use a website called PTCFast to schedule our parent/teacher conferences. Fall conferences will be after school on Wednesday, 10/11 and all day on Thursday, 10/12. Please go to the link below and schedule a time for your conference. If you have any questions about scheduling or need help you can call the office at 503-356-2510.

Volunteers
If you expressed interest in volunteering in our class you should have received an email from me last week. Please let me know if you wanted to volunteer, but didn't hear from me. We look forward to having our volunteers join us next week!
