Memorial Day
There will be no school in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, 5/27.


Math
Next week will be our final week of state testing! The students will be working on the math performance task (PT). This test has less questions than the computer adaptive test (CAT) they took last week, but the questions will involve multi-steps and explaining the thinking behind answers. In class students will continue to work on solving problems with customary units. Give them some items and have them tell you which units a person would use to measure them. 

Reading
This week students selected their "last chance to read as a 4th grader" book. The book could be any genre. Each child will read that book and complete a written response on the book when they are done. Ask your student which book they picked.

Writing
Just like in reading, students will get a chance to select a "last chance piece as a 4th grade writer". They spent time looking back through their writing notebooks selected a story they started and want to finish. Some students decided they want to write a sequel to a story they have already written. They will be working on these pieces during our writing time.   

Field Trip
Our final field trip of the year will take place at Cedar Mill Wetlands, off Barnes, just before 118th. The students will be leaving West TV at about 9:30 and we expect to return to school by 11:20, just in time for lunch. We're hoping for at least 8 chaperones, but at this time only have 1. Please let me know if you are interested in joining. You'll need to attend a chaperone information meeting at the site on Thursday, 5/30 at 3:30.

The Week Ahead 3/2-3/6

How We Organize Ourselves Thank you to all of the chaperones who joined us for our field trip to the State Capitol! Hopefully you have had a chance to check out some of the pictures from the trip on our class Instagram account, blanc.wstv. On Friday, our classroom committees presented their classroom bills. There was fierce debate but in the end, only one of the five bills got a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate and is now a classroom law. Have your student tell you what they think of the new classroom law. Last Monday, I sent you an email letting you know that we will begin teaching our state mandated Erin's Law lessons next Monday, 3/2. In the email I sent a link that included information on the learning outcomes as well as a link to a website with more information. The Week Ahead 3/9-3/13

Inquiry Next week we'll begin our Where We Are in Place and Time inquiry unit. The central idea of this unit is migration impacts individuals and communities. The lines of inquiry are reasons for migration, ways migration impacts quality of life, and impact on current groups. In the beginning of the unit we'll learn about migration by studying westward expansion, starting with the Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark led Corps of Discovery. Math Students will continue their study of fractions next week. Up to this point our main focus has been working with equivalence and comparing fractions. Two of the big ideas students should grasp are for fractions to be equivalent, the ratio must be kept constant and the greater the denominator, the smaller the pieces.
