The Week Ahead 6/10-6/14

Final Week of School 
We have reached the last week of the year! It has been such a pleasure to teach this great class! I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. 

Reading
Students have one more reading log due on Tuesday, 6/11. Some of the students have completed their final book response of the year on Seesaw. The rest of the children will finish this week. Please make sure your child continues to read over the summer. Set aside time each day for them to read. To help keep them interested in reading I suggest taking them to the library every few weeks. Another way to keep your child interested in reading is to get them a magazine subscription. I remember as a child my parents gave me a subscription to Sports Illustrated for Kids and that was huge for my development as a reader.


Idiom of the week: all good things come to an end

Writing
The students are working hard to finish up their final writing pieces. They took a look back through their writing notebooks and selected the story they were most interested in completing before the end of the year. Ask your student how their story is coming along.


Math
We'll be wrapping up our final measurement unit this week. Check the Seesaw activities of your student to see how they understanding the unit so far. Students will still have access to their Prodigy and Dreambox accounts, if they want to keep their math skills fresh over the summer!

Inquiry
This week students will be working on their animal sketches. We're focusing on giving constructive feedback to each other in an attempt to improve the quality of our sketches. After students get to a point where they are happy with the quality of their sketch, they will paint the animal with watercolors. Ask your student which animal they chose.

Report Cards
Report cards will be mailed home on Monday, 6/17.

The Week Ahead 3/2-3/6

How We Organize Ourselves Thank you to all of the chaperones who joined us for our field trip to the State Capitol! Hopefully you have had a chance to check out some of the pictures from the trip on our class Instagram account, blanc.wstv. On Friday, our classroom committees presented their classroom bills. There was fierce debate but in the end, only one of the five bills got a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate and is now a classroom law. Have your student tell you what they think of the new classroom law. Last Monday, I sent you an email letting you know that we will begin teaching our state mandated Erin's Law lessons next Monday, 3/2. In the email I sent a link that included information on the learning outcomes as well as a link to a website with more information. The Week Ahead 3/9-3/13

Inquiry Next week we'll begin our Where We Are in Place and Time inquiry unit. The central idea of this unit is migration impacts individuals and communities. The lines of inquiry are reasons for migration, ways migration impacts quality of life, and impact on current groups. In the beginning of the unit we'll learn about migration by studying westward expansion, starting with the Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark led Corps of Discovery. Math Students will continue their study of fractions next week. Up to this point our main focus has been working with equivalence and comparing fractions. Two of the big ideas students should grasp are for fractions to be equivalent, the ratio must be kept constant and the greater the denominator, the smaller the pieces.
