The Week Ahead 11/3-11/7

It was great to get a chance to sit down and talk with everyone at conferences! It's nice to have the chance to acknowledge the accomplishments of each student and discuss the areas where there is room for growth.

This week in math we will be starting with lesson 5 from module 2. Here is a very useful link that can assist parents who are helping their kids with the Engage NY homework. http://www.oakdale.k12.ca.us/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1402228861002. If you click on module 2, you will then be taken to a page that has all 5 of the lessons from the module. There you can find short videos that show problems from the homework being completed. Module 2 only has 5 lessons, so we will take the end of module assessment on Tuesday. Depending on how we do on the assessment, we will either begin module 3 on Wednesday, or review some of the concepts from Module 2. Look for the scored tests to be coming home this week.

The genre study of biographies is off to a good start. All of the students started reading their book last week. A rubric of how the presentations will be scored has been sent home. On Monday I will give a sample presentation on a biography of Sacagawea that I read to the class and they will be scoring me using the rubric. I hope they aren't too strict! You can help your student prepare for their presentation by checking in with them and making sure they address all of the questions that are on the rubric. The book presentations will take place on Wednesday, November 12th.

We will be shifting gears in science from engineering and design to the Earth's resources. This will lead to studying how rocks and minerals are classified, the impact that weathering and erosion have on the Earth, and the water cycle just to name a few. In other exciting science news, we just had salmon eggs delivered to the tank in Mr. Geier's class! We will be monitoring the eggs as they go through the salmon life cycle.

On Monday, 11/3, students will receive another spelling packet that will be due the next Monday, 11/10. In addition, they will be expected to complete four reading log entries that will also be due on Monday 11/10.
