The Week Ahead 9/29-10/3

Each student was given a yellow homework planner and a purple homework folder. In the planner they should be recording their homework for the day. The homework folder will hold the homework planner and any homework. The homework folder should be taken home every night and returned to school the next morning.

Next week we will start an engineering and design unit. Students will be doing some hands on activities. There are a few supplies that we could use your help gathering. If you have any empty paper towel rolls, empty boxes of cereal, or full cans of something the size of a can of soup, we could put them to use. In addition, if you are free Monday morning at 8:40, we could use volunteers to help organize the supplies into sets for the groups. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering on Monday.

This week students were set up with Moby Max accounts. At this time we are only using the math programs on the website. If your student ever wants to do extra math they can login at mobymax.com/or1248. They each have a unique username that they should have written down on a card and put in their homework folder. The password for everyone is blanc. A nice feature of this site is that the lessons are differentiated to the abilities of each child. On Wednesday, we all took a placement test on the website. Based on the placement test, the website gives each child lessons to work on. There are also games featured on the site, but students have to earn game time by working on lessons. They can earn 5 minutes of game time for 15 minutes spent working on a lesson.

On Monday, September 29th, students will begin reading their book for the realistic fiction genre study. Each child has had their book approved by me. Students will give a book presentation with a visual representation on Wednesday, October 15th. Some ideas for the visual representation include a poster, a diorama, or a computer slideshow. I am open to other ideas, as long as I am notified what each student is going to do by Monday, October 6th. In order to give the students time to work on their book presentations there will be no reading log homework during the weeks of 10/6-10/10 and 10/13-10/17.
