The Week Ahead 3/16-3/20

Students will have their spelling packet and reading logs due on Monday, 3/16. They will also take the test over the words from their spelling packet. There won't be any homework assigned over spring break. Instead the students will be given their spelling packet on Monday, 3/16 and that packet will be due on Friday, 3/20. The test over those words will be on the 20th as well. There will be no reading logs assigned for the week.

 For students who want to do school work over the break, there will be an optional recording sheet to keep track of minutes read. They can also do Moby Max math. Just like winter break, the student who reads the most minutes, and does the most minutes of math on Moby Max will get small prizes.

 The final fantasy book group meetings will take place on Tuesday, 3/17. Each student is expected to have finished reading their book. Ask your student who their favorite character from their book was, and why they liked them the most. 

 In math students have been working on demonstrating fraction equivalence. They have learned how to use multiplication, division, and make visual diagrams to show that two fractions are equivalent. Next week we are going to work on adding and subtracting fractions. This will include adding and subtracting whole numbers and mixed numbers. We will be working on dividing by 6's in our fact fluency. 

 On Wednesday, 3/18 science specialists from the district will be coming to our class to teach an hour long engineering design lesson. The students really enjoyed their previous two visits from the science specialists. 

I hope to see you at the Science Fair on Thursday, 3/19. Even if your student didn't do a science experiment on their own at home, we will have a class experiment on display that each child contributed to. 

  Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, 3/20. Please sign the envelope and send it back to school when students return from spring break on Monday, 3/30.

The Week Ahead 3/2-3/6

How We Organize Ourselves Thank you to all of the chaperones who joined us for our field trip to the State Capitol! Hopefully you have had a chance to check out some of the pictures from the trip on our class Instagram account, blanc.wstv. On Friday, our classroom committees presented their classroom bills. There was fierce debate but in the end, only one of the five bills got a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate and is now a classroom law. Have your student tell you what they think of the new classroom law. Last Monday, I sent you an email letting you know that we will begin teaching our state mandated Erin's Law lessons next Monday, 3/2. In the email I sent a link that included information on the learning outcomes as well as a link to a website with more information. The Week Ahead 3/9-3/13

Inquiry Next week we'll begin our Where We Are in Place and Time inquiry unit. The central idea of this unit is migration impacts individuals and communities. The lines of inquiry are reasons for migration, ways migration impacts quality of life, and impact on current groups. In the beginning of the unit we'll learn about migration by studying westward expansion, starting with the Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark led Corps of Discovery. Math Students will continue their study of fractions next week. Up to this point our main focus has been working with equivalence and comparing fractions. Two of the big ideas students should grasp are for fractions to be equivalent, the ratio must be kept constant and the greater the denominator, the smaller the pieces.
