The Week Ahead 3/9-3/12

There will be no school for students on Friday, 3/13, as it will be a staff grading day.

Students will have a spelling packet and reading logs due on Monday, 3/9. They will also take their spelling test and be given their spelling packet that will be due on Monday, 3/16.

The next fantasy book group meetings will take place on Tuesday, 3/10 and Thursday, 3/12. Ask your child which day their meeting will take place and have them tell you about their book. They should be able to tell you whether their book is told from the 1st person or 3rd person point of view.

The students have been doing a great job incorporating all that we have learned about persuasive writing to make strong arguments. However, as many of you noticed at conferences when you read their most recent on demand writing piece, many of them still have room to grow as editors of their work. Last week students were given editing checklists and given the task of editing their most recent persuasive on demand paper.

We completed our first full week of fractions. Students worked on showing fraction equivalence visually by drawing pictures. They also decomposed fractions by writing them in addition and multiplication number sentences. For example, if a student was shown a picture of the fraction 1/2, they would add lines to show that the fraction 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2. Then they would decompose 1/2 with addition by writing a number sentence to show that 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2. They would do the same thing with multiplication by writing a number sentence that showed that (1/4 x 2) = 1/2.

On Friday afternoon we took advantage of the great weather and read outside. Have a look at the pictures!

The Week Ahead 3/2-3/6

How We Organize Ourselves Thank you to all of the chaperones who joined us for our field trip to the State Capitol! Hopefully you have had a chance to check out some of the pictures from the trip on our class Instagram account, blanc.wstv. On Friday, our classroom committees presented their classroom bills. There was fierce debate but in the end, only one of the five bills got a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate and is now a classroom law. Have your student tell you what they think of the new classroom law. Last Monday, I sent you an email letting you know that we will begin teaching our state mandated Erin's Law lessons next Monday, 3/2. In the email I sent a link that included information on the learning outcomes as well as a link to a website with more information. The Week Ahead 3/9-3/13

Inquiry Next week we'll begin our Where We Are in Place and Time inquiry unit. The central idea of this unit is migration impacts individuals and communities. The lines of inquiry are reasons for migration, ways migration impacts quality of life, and impact on current groups. In the beginning of the unit we'll learn about migration by studying westward expansion, starting with the Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark led Corps of Discovery. Math Students will continue their study of fractions next week. Up to this point our main focus has been working with equivalence and comparing fractions. Two of the big ideas students should grasp are for fractions to be equivalent, the ratio must be kept constant and the greater the denominator, the smaller the pieces.
