The Week Ahead 3/13-3/17

Inquiry
Students have been working hard in their committees to write a bill that solves a problem in our classroom. They are attempting to consider the values of the community in their solutions. We will be voting on the bills on Monday, 3/13. In order for a bill to pass it will have to receive a majority yes vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If a bill passes both legislative groups, it will then have to be approved by Governor Blanc.

Reading
Our class has taken on the yearlong task of determining which idiom of the week is most commonly used in literature and everyday life. Anytime a student encounters one of the idioms of the week they will document it and add it to our class tally. Ask your student which idiom they predict will end up being the most common.

Idiom of the week: Let the cat out of the bag

Math
We will start next week on lesson 37 in our study of fractions. Our end of unit test will be taking place on Friday, 3/17. You can help your student prepare for their test by making sure they complete their daily assignment and going over the practice test with them. We will send the practice test home on Thursday evening.

Field Trip
Last week students were sent home with a permission slip for our upcoming field trip to Commonwealth Lake. We will be releasing the trout that have been in the modular this month. We expect to be at the park from 12:45-1:45. In addition to releasing the eggs students will be making sketches and observations of the area. We have room for more chaperones if you are interested in joining us on the trip.

Art Lit
Please read the message below from the Art Lit coordinators.

Art Literacy is starting up for the month of March!  We are excited to say our upcoming lesson is creative and unique.

The artist name is Louise Nevelson.

Nevelson worked in sculpture of found items, mostly debris and wood.  She used the color black in a monochrome manner because she felt it was all inclusive, containing every color.  As well as peace, quietness, and it wasn't intrusive on emotions.

In order to complete the
ir own sculptures, your students will need some found items donated from home.

Items that might be considered used or common.  For example; buttons, pasta, small wooden baby blocks, larger legos, cloths pins, large beads, bottle caps, screws, washers, old puzzle pieces, etc.
