The Week Ahead 3/6-3/10

Inquiry
Students will continue exploring the central idea of community values impact leaders and decision making. Our class will be divided into Senators and Representatives. Then students will be placed in a committee. Each committee will write a classroom bill that they believe represents the values of our classroom community. At the end of the week each of the bills will get put before the House and the Senate. In order for a bill to become a classroom law, it will need to get a majority vote in both the House and Senate, and it will also have to be signed by Governor Blanc.

Writing
Next week we will begin working on persuasive writing. First, we are going to all write an opinion paper about the same topic and later students will get a chance to write a persuasive paper on a topic of their choice. The techniques learned during writing will come in very handy when students attempt to convince their classmates to vote for their classroom bill.

Reading
Reading logs are due on Tuesday, 3/7. Students are expected to record a minimum of two hours reading outside of school each week. Students will also take their vocabulary test on that Tuesday.

Idiom of the week: cold shoulder

Field Trip
Students were sent home with a permission slip for our upcoming field trip to Commonwealth Lake. We will be releasing the trout that have been in the modular this month. An email was sent with information about chaperoning on the trip. Please let me know before Friday, 3/10 if you are interested in joining us on the trip. If more than eight parents volunteer, we will draw names to determine who will join us.
