The Week Ahead 10/26-10/30

Thank you to everyone who came in for conferences. I enjoyed getting a chance to talk about this great group of kids!

On Monday, October 26th we will begin a unit called Biztown. Biztown encompasses elements of community and economy, work readiness, financial literacy, and business management. The unit will be taught in all of the 4th and 5th grade classrooms and will culminate with a field trip on December 9th. We will need adult volunteers from the participating classrooms. A volunteer must be able to attend a Biztown training on either Tuesday, 12/1 from 6-7:30 pm, or Thursday, 12/3 from 10:11:30 am. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for the field trip.

In math we have started Module 2. This module involves using the metric system to make conversions and solve problems. It is a very short module, with only 5 lessons. If students don't complete their lesson in class, it is homework. Here is a good resource for helping your student with homework. http://www.oakdale.k12.ca.us/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1409391041462
Our fact practice will focus on multiplying by 4's.

I was pleased with the realistic book presentations that students gave. At conferences parents were informed of the current reading level of their student and encouraged to have their child read as much as possible at home. I've added a new tab to the website called Realistic Fiction Books. On the page I've listed some of my favorite books within the realistic fiction genre. I'll attempt to make a book list for each of the genres we study this year. Please let me know if you have a book recommendation and I'll be happy to add it to my list.

Students have started a new book genre study. They are now all reading a biography book about a notable person. Each child is reading a book from the "Who Was?" series. After reading their book, students will answer seven questions about their notable person, in writing. The answers to the questions are due on Monday, 11/2. I've emailed a list of the seven questions as well as the rubric that will be used to score each answer. Because students may need to spend time reading their biography books or answering their questions at home, there will be no reading logs or spelling packets this week.

The class Halloween party will be on Friday, 10/30. Students can bring their costume with them to school. They will be able to change in their costume prior to the party. The costumes can't have any fake weapons, masks, or face paint.
