The Week Ahead 10/5-10/9

When students return to school on Monday, 10/5, they will have their spelling packets and reading logs due. They will also be tested on their spelling words from the packet and be given their weekly homework for the following Monday.

On Tuesday of last week students brought home a blue piece of paper that gave information about our realistic fiction genre study. Each child will be allowed to select a book of their choice, but in order to ensure it is at their reading level, it has to be approved by me. Students will begin reading their books on Monday, 10/5. That afternoon, they will also be bringing home guidelines for their presentation as well as the rubric they will be scored with.

Each child should have brought their Mid Module 1 Assessment home last week. We are now continuing with the second half of Module 1. This will focus on solving multi-step addition and subtraction word problems and then using estimation to assess the reasonableness of our answers. The multi-step problems require students to read them very closely. For example a problem may say "Billy sold 1,245 peaches in January, 2,287 peaches in February, and 299 more peaches than were sold in February, in March. How many total peaches were sold in the three months?" Most of the students want to just add the three numbers up. To get the correct answer, they need to find the March total first, by adding 299 to the February total. Then they would have the March total and be able to add the February and January totals to find the correct answer. If a student does not complete their lesson in class they are expected to take it home and return it the next day. If your student does not have homework, but you would like them to work on math, have them do Moby Max https://www.mobymax.com/or1248. Each students username is just their first name, all lowercase and 2015, with no spaces between them. The password for everyone is blanc.

In writing, we have continued to work on showing and not telling in our narrative stories. We have learned about the difference between literal language and figurative language. Students have practiced three types of figurative language; onomatopoeia, simile, and hyperbole. Have your student explain the difference between literal language and figurative language to you. Then have them tell you about the three types of figurative language we have learned about so far.
